Traditionally, the work of Hyojun Kim (b.1994) has explored the different ways points of view and lived experience can alter how someone interprets an artwork. Shifting between abstraction and figurative styles, Kim would incorporate elements of both styles in his paintings to further challenge the viewer to make their own mind up about what they are seeing.

However, with this recent body of work, Kim has expanded on this even further, by drawing inspiration from emotions rather than styles to address this way of looking.

By turning inwards he has developed a more personal series of paintings which look at how the internal and external influences that he experiences in everyday life can both be presented in the one work.

While initially the viewer can more easily grasp the image depicted, closer inspection reveals far deeper and layered textural and color-based elements, built up on the canvas by the artist, demonstrating how what we may project to the world, at first glance, may not be everything and that the longer we spend with the work, the more we see;

“The original purpose inevitably diminishes over time. What once served as a definitive solution gradually loses its significance. The initial intent, once strong, now stands weakened by the passage of time. These elements, often considered crucial, paradoxically become the least significant. Truth, while it may exist, ultimately becomes elusive and untraceable. Change is constant, traces remain, and the present moment embodies the purest form of existence.”
